From Sophie:

The creator of Lord Peter Wimsey was pre-eminent among the stylish and thoughtful women writers of the golden period of detective fiction. She won a scholarship to Somerville College Oxford and graduated with first class honours — but in 1915, when women were not formally awarded degrees.

So it is not surprising that one of her great themes is the tension between passions and the intellect. In particular, she explores the fear that falling in love will irretrievably diminish an intelligent women in the five-book sequence which charts the relationship between Lord Peter and clever, independent crime writer Harriet Vane.

She also wrote plays and translated The Divine Comedy.
